Instagram for U-13 in consideration!

Recent tweets by the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri have ignited talks on the idea of creating Instagram for under 13’s. According to the former Instagram news feed and designer, in his recent tweet, children are increasingly requesting their parents to sign up for applications that will allow them to keep in touch with friends. He went on to say they will borrow a leaf from the Messenger Kids project they did earlier on. If this idea comes to life, the parents of these kids will have control over their children and usage of this application. Only time will tell which features they will come up with to give the parents absolute control over their children online.

Client Concerns

The tweets have attracted mixed reactions, with some against the idea. One tweeter asked for documentation to back up the claim. He was also interested in knowing how the idea was pitched. Ryan Mac, a senior tech reporter at BuzzFeedNews, raised issues to do with bullying and harassment. He wondered how these youngsters would be protected, yet even adults are unsafe with the other app for 13 years and above. Others were excited they will have control over their children’s online activities and the most important thing to them.

How soon?

One question most tech enthusiasts would like answered is how soon the plan will be implemented. There has been a continuous exchange of information between reliable sources working for the giant provider and credible tech news providers. According to shared communication, Facebook is prioritizing the project. The marshals behind its effectiveness are Mosseri and Pavni Diwanje, the vice president. The latter was one of the team players of the group that successfully made YouTube kids happen.

YouTube and Messenger kids were all hits, and that is motivation enough for this one. Although, an effort will be required to make it happen. At this point, the question of how soon is hard to answer as things still look blurred. But, the commitment shown in words by influential people working at the tech giant shows how motivated they are to make this a reality.

Children will benefit from this program, but parents will be excited because they will have absolute control. According to Vishal Shah – the product VP, one of the major features the development team will focus on are the security features. We all hope the product will deliver and let the kids socialize without being preyed on by bullies.

Instagram statement

According to this blog post; https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/continuing-to-make-instagram-safer-for-the-youngest-members-of-our-community made on 16 March 2021, Instagram seemed to have confirmed that the project is in progress. The goal is to support parents and teens. This shows how determined Instagram is to provide the best for its users. The current app does not allow children under the age of 13 to sign up, and that may be termed as discriminatory by some people. The introduction of the application means no one will be left out of social media because of their age.

The launch of the program will be rolled out in phase with select South American countries the first beneficiaries. The rest of the world will also benefit once the program is fully launched.
