Can AI Feel Emotion?

The emotion was initially a reserve of human beings. Today, it is astonishing how even creatures and things that aren’t human can feel emotions. Artificial intelligence is gaining popularity every other day. These inventions are making a major difference in the world to the amazement of humans. Well, according to research, artificial intelligence cannot feel emotions. But, there’s one surprising fact about these human creations. They can successfully and mimic emotions. An AI form will react to your actions but not necessarily feel anything. The truth is they’re only acting as per the program’s input in them. Clearly, forms of AI cannot feel the emotions of their own. Let’s see why.

AI Make-Up

Think about how all forms of AI are made. One thing, they are mechanical, electrical, and made of programs. To allow the third component to work effectively, they are made of processors. Any form of AI is only limited to the programs made of it. One great quality of a human is autonomy. They have the ability to change with time, emotion, and the environment. A stimulus is part of this component.

Some robots are programmed to learn with time and experience. Well, there is also a limit to that. A human being has the ability to say and look happy when they are sad. That said, a robot cannot tell such a lie. Before they get to such a high form of intelligence, it may take some time.

Today, humans love to disconnect their emotions from their actions. Some do this to keep themselves safe from exploitation. Others do this out of cheekiness. Whatever the reason, a fellow human can almost always tell. This is because they have the ability to put themselves in the shoes of those humans they’re dealing with. At the back of their heads, they can tell this particular human is faking this.

There is a category of AI referred to as emotion AI. The other term used to refer to this group of AI is Affective Computing. This type of AI is one that learns with experience. This is to make a better next time encounter with humans. This means understanding human behavior and feelings. Once that happens, the robots will then possess the ability to react better to the emotions of human beings.

With every other AI invention, the man tries to make robots more advanced. These developers program them to feel and react to man’s emotions. It is important to remember a robot cannot choose to act emotionally. What does this mean?

Say, for instance, a man likes a woman; he will be gutted to say hi in a romantic way. This is a show of attraction and confidence in display too. The lady will feel the emotion and almost accurately tell whether the guy is real or not. She will then choose whether to trust him or not. If the man is a robot, he will tell the lady is beautiful but will rarely act the same way the guy will. At least at the first encounter, a robot may say hi and show interest but not really possess the guy’s emotional intelligence.

AI VERSUS HUMANS

Emotion is one of the human qualities that make him/her a special creature. Most robot developers have failed terribly in trying to make their inventions be sources of emotions. The closest they’ve gone is to make these forms of AI react to emotions and not really generate them. In moments that require spontaneity, these robots fail terribly.

Humans will always feel emotion. Their ability to hide emotion is also out of this world. That may make a robot react with the wrong emotion. This may not be the case with all the robots. Some robots are so advanced that they will tell man’s actual emotion and react accordingly. This is made better by the fact that these forms of AI learn with time. That said, these creations will react in a better way in case they come across an identical scenario to that they’ve faced before.

Emotion comes out of a connection between the human brain and body. When the body is affected beyond control, the brain is contacted, and the same body is made to react. When the brain is also affected, say by words or occurrences and other people’s actions, the body is made to react with robots; it’s somehow different.

Think about an AI composition. Robots are mechanical creations with processors acting like their brains. Most are electrical to power their functions. Now, this is a great difference from humans. The human body and brain are connected. Whatever affects the body affects the brain. The reverse is true. When the brain is affected, the body responds as it is also affected.

Robots have a body and brain working independently. You could hit a robot with a hammer, and it’ll keep working as if nothing happened.  This is true, especially if the robot isn’t affected physically. The same does not apply to humans. You physically hit a man, and their emotions are affected. Depending on the action, they’ll show feelings of sadness or happiness.

That is the major difference between humans and robots. The disconnect between the robot’s body and its processor makes it lack the ability to harbor emotions of its own. Still, these robots have been programmed to sense emotion and react accordingly. Humans, on the other hand, have a body and brain that are interconnected. If one is affected, the other will feel the effect too and react. Above all, humans will always be emotional while robots aren’t.

Conclusion

AI cannot feel emotion. They lack the physical make up to be affected emotionally. Still, most robots are designed to sense emotion and react. Therefore, most emotional actions from robots are reactions. Forms of AI do not harbor feelings of their own. They only react to those shown by humans. Emotions are a human reserve, although the latest forms of AI are learning to be emotional.
